Press Release

19 June 2003
Two web design experts from the Manchester-based interactive and fulfilment company, Zendor, are spending a day in local schools as part of the Design Council’s initiative, Designers in Schools Week (23rd-27th June 2003). Designers in Schools Week is intended to give 11-16 year-old pupils the opportunity to learn new skills and creative techniques from industry professionals, and to help them relate Design and Technology as a curriculum subject with how design is used in business and every-day life.
David Hawdale, Head of Design and Usability at Zendor will be attending St Matthew’s Roman Catholic High School in Moston, Manchester on 26th June, and Simon Crosbie, Zendor’s Senior Designer will be attending his old secondary school, Wirral Grammar School. Both David and Simon will be responsible for planning their own programmes for the day and each will play host to ten or more pupils from the school.
David believes in a usability-led approach to web design and leads a team of cognitive scientists within Zendor’s design team to ensure good web usability from the outset. During his day at St Matthews, David will be demonstrating how a website designed to be simple to use, easy to understand and comprehensive is essential for an enjoyable online experience.
Having produced websites for leading football clubs including Liverpool and Everton, gaming companies such as Stanley Casinos and various retailers including River Island and Early Learning Centre, Zendor is leading the field in website design and development.
David comments, “All too often, websites are developed with little or no thought about how easy they are to use and navigate. Instead, the latest IT gimmicks are given precedence over website usability. I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experiences with the students at St. Matthews so that they can see how usability should be a fundamental part of the web design process, and learn how Design and Usability provides a great career opportunity in the North West.”
Simon will also be demonstrating a usability-led approach to web design but will be taking a creative approach focusing on graphic design techniques for the web.
